1. The Prep: Skip the Heavy Primer

Normally, we are taught that more primer equals more staying power. With liquid shadow, the opposite is true.

Because these formulas are designed to be self-setting, adding a tacky base can actually ruin the finish.

So, don’t over-prime. Layers of tacky eye primer or heavy concealer will “mess with the formula” and add unnecessary texture.

Instead, apply over clear skin or a very light amount of unset foundation.

Trevor notes that liquid shadows often act as a primer themselves, so they don’t need the extra help.

2. The Application: Less is Always More

“It is much easier to add more pigment than it is to take it off,” Trevor says.

Applying liquid shadow heavily over the entire eye is the quickest way to end up with a patchy, frustrated look.

Don’t apply the product directly from the wand to the eye if you want a soft look.

Use a light hand, instead. Or, put a bit of product on the back of your hand first.

From there, use a synthetic brush to pick up only what you need. “With this, you can build the shadow as carefully and gradually as you want,” he explains.

3. The Tool: Why Synthetic Bristles Matter

When working with creams and liquids, your tool choice is critical. Trevor is firm on using synthetic brushes rather than natural hair.

“Natural hair bristles will be damaged with liquid products,” Trevor reminds us.

Synthetic fibers are non-porous, meaning they won’t soak up the product or become stiff and ruined after one use.

4. The Timing: Work One Eye at a Time

Liquid shadows have a “dry-down” period where they transform from a fluid to a budge-proof finish. If you wait too long to blend, you’ll be stuck with harsh lines.

The Technique: “Don’t blend it out too slowly because within a minute or so, it is gonna be completely dry,” Trevor says.

He recommends completing one eye entirely before moving to the next. The “self-setting” nature of the product is exactly why it stays in place all day without creasing.

5. The Versatility: Mix and Match

Don’t think of liquid shadow as a standalone product. It is incredibly versatile and can be used to “boost” your existing powder collection.

Trevor recommends using the liquid shadow as a base to help powder shadows stick. This creates a super smooth, blurred canvas that makes the powder colors pop.

He adds, “use a small pencil brush to pick up a tiny amount of liquid for the lower lash line.” This ensures your under-eye colour won’t smudge or run.
