Y’all. We need to talk about checkerboard nails because I have officially fallen down a graphic nail look rabbit hole and I refuse to be the only one losing sleep over this.
Here’s what’s happening: everyone’s tired of playing it safe with their manicure, and checkerboard is stepping up as the print that says “I have a personality” without trying too hard.
Checkerboards are all about grids, and grids on grids.

Needs a quick refresher?
Checkerboard nails are exactly what they sound like; alternating squares of color arranged in that classic grid pattern, kind of like a mini chessboard living on your nail bed.
It’s typically done freehand with a thin brush or striping tape to keep those lines crisp.
Also, depending on the size of the squares, it can look delicate and refined or big, bold, and impossible to ignore.
And that’s honestly where things get interesting this year, because we are officially over the basic black-and-white checkerboard.

Don’t get us wrong, it’s a classic for a reason, but this year, it is all about taking the print and making it LOUD.
We’re talking clashing colors, mismatched grid sizes, checkerboards layered over other patterns, and zero rules about which nail actually matches the next one.
It’s less “polished chess set” and more freestyle, giving off that maximalist energy, and this whole nail season has been building toward.

Basic is out. Personality is in.
So, consider this less of an article and more of a moodboard: 50+ checkerboard looks, zero filler, maximum inspiration.
